Coupon Code Templates
Coupon code templates are marketing templates that display a single copy code button. When tapped, the code is copied to the customer's clipboard.
Limitations
- Coupon code templates are currently not supported by the WhatsApp web client.
- Codes are limited to 15 characters.
- Button text cannot be customized.
- Templates are limited to one copy code button.
Use Cases for Coupon Code Templates
WhatsApp, with its massive user base and personal touch, offers several interesting use cases for coupon codes:
Driving Sales and Conversions:
- Promotional offers: Businesses can send out targeted WhatsApp messages with coupon codes to specific customer segments based on purchase history or interests. This encourages them to make a purchase, especially during special occasions like holidays or product launches.
- Incentivized sales through chatbots: WhatsApp chatbots can be used to engage customers and offer them exclusive coupon codes based on their interaction within the chat.
Enhancing Customer Engagement:
- Rewarding loyalty: Businesses can send personalized coupon codes to loyal customers as a token of appreciation, encouraging them to continue using their services.
- Welcome Offers: Greet new subscribers with a discount code as a thank you for joining.
- Birthday or anniversary greetings: Offering birthday or anniversary discounts through WhatsApp adds a personal touch and strengthens customer relationships.
- Feedback incentives: Businesses can use coupon codes as an incentive for customers to provide feedback through surveys or reviews.
Other Use Cases:
- Referral programs: Offering referral coupons through WhatsApp can encourage existing customers to recommend the business to their friends and family.
- Event registrations: Businesses can use unique coupon codes for registering attendees to events or workshops, allowing for better tracking and management.
Benefits:
- Easy redemption: WhatsApp makes coupon redemption convenient. Customers can simply show the code to staff or enter it online.
- Measurable results: Businesses can track coupon usage data through analytics to understand their effectiveness and optimize future campaigns.
- Personalization: Combining coupon codes with personalized messages in WhatsApp can significantly improve the customer experience and increase the chance of redemption.
Procedure
- First Navigate to Sales channels >> WhatsApp in the menu.
- Click on the Message Templates tab under WhatsApp.
- Now click on the Create New button to get started with creating a WhatsApp template.
- Now provide a name for your template. Ensure your naming convention uses underscores (“_”) instead of spaces, and the template names should only contain lowercase alphanumeric characters. (e.g. summer_sale). Select the template as Marketing.
- Select a language for your template and select the Template type as Coupon from the dropdown list.
- Now on the Header section, you can add a Text/Image/Video or File for your message template. The header is an optional section, which you can skip by selecting None.
If you want to add a text message for your header section, select Text in the dropdown list and add your text in the input box. The character limit for the text is 60.
If you want to add Image/Video/File formats for your header section, select any options between Image/Video/File formats and upload your sample file for the template. The maximum size limit for an image is 5 MB, for video and file it is 10 MB.
After your sample image is uploaded, you will see the text Sample image uploaded text.

In the body section, add your text for the template.
Text with Variables:
In the text field of the body section, you can insert multiple variable options from the list of provided variables - User’s First Name, Store Name, Agent Name, Account Owner Name, Support Email, Support Phone, Outlet Address & Custom field. To insert a variable, click the ‘insert{...}’ option and add your required variable.
Let's say you added a variable User’s First name in your text message, the customers will receive a message along with their saved First names in your created message template.
Note: The character limit for the text field in the body is 1024.
Buttons
Now get started to add the coupon code button which can be found under CTA buttons.
Click on +Add new.
Click on the added CTA button and select the option of Copy offer code under Button action.
Once the Copy Offer Code button is selected, the <COUPON_CODE> will be populated as the default during configuration. You can then input the actual coupon code, such as 'SUMMER50' when sharing the template with your customers via Broadcast, Live Chat, Bot Builder, or Automate Responses.
Note: Currently button name cannot be edited for the Copy Offer code.
You can add more buttons based on your business requirements. You have the option to include a mix of both button types i.e. Quick Reply & CTA allowing for a maximum total of 10 buttons.
CTA buttons:
In case you add a URL button, click on the Open a website option, add the name for your button (e.g. Visit Site) select your URL type between Static & Dynamic, then provide a link for the URL in the input field & click on Submit.
Note: It is important to note that the Dynamic URL feature allows for the incorporation of a post URL utilizing a single variable ({{1}}) at the end of the URL, subsequently, the remaining portions of the URL can be appended when shared with a customer under Live Chat, Broadcast, Automate Responses or Bot Builder.
For example, you can add a button named “Show now” & provide a link to your website for your customers.
In case you add a Call Phone number button, then you need to provide a phone number followed by your country code for the button action.
Quick Reply buttons
Under the quick reply buttons, you will find a pop-up, where you need to provide a button title and select any of the options from - Start a product checkout, Start a collection flow, Start a bot flow, Ping live chat, or Custom payload for your button action. Once you are done, click on the close button in the pop-up to save your button action.
- In the Footer section, you can add a short text for your customer in the input field, ( e.g. Thank You). If you do not wish to add a footer section for your template, you can skip this step. The character limit for the text is 60.
- Once you are done adding your details, for the template, click on the Save button.
Note: Always double-check before saving your template, as it will be forwarded to WhatsApp for review purposes and cannot be altered once saved. - You can check the status of your added templates under the STATUS column on the WhatsApp message templates page. Once your template is approved you can share it with your customers.

Now while sharing the template with your customer under the Live chat, click on the copy offer code button to add the coupon code. (E.g. “SUMMER50”), then click on Save.
Here is an example of the coupon template received by the customer.
Broadcast Coupon template with Unique codes:
To broadcast your Coupon template with unique codes for your customers follow the below steps:
- First Navigate to Automations >> Broadcast in the menu.
- Now set a name for your Broadcast and select WhatsApp in Messaging Channels.
- Now under Create message, select the created Coupon template (e.g. summer_sale).
- Now click on the copy offer code button to add the coupon code.
- Under Enter a coupon code, type the variable tag as “<custom_field_uniquecode>”, then click on Save.
- Under Settings, select the option for targeting By uploading a CSV file with contacts.
- In your CSV file with contacts, add a new column named “uniquecode”, under this column provide the unique codes for each of your customers and then upload a CSV file.
- Under Scheduling, select the period for your broadcast then click on Save & Send.
