Malaysia SMS Features and Restrictions
Overview
Malaysia is a major SMS market that is continuing to grow in size. Along with this growth however, many problems are arising. Carriers in Malaysia are implementing more and more spam filters to prevent A2P traffic reaching their network via international SS7 routes.
Spam filters can sometimes return fake delivery receipts and don’t discriminate between spam and legitimate traffic. Therefore, you may think the route is working fine when it is not. In reality, a large amount of messages on low cost signaling routes are being blocked.
Vonage uses a direct connection to all networks in Malaysia. This improves the real delivery ratio and allows sensitive applications such as financial alerts and password delivery to reach the phone. It is a high-quality, stable route which, in combination with our adaptive routing, will help to guarantee message delivery in Malaysia.
Sender ID
Sender IDs are all overwritten to a random short code or occasionally an international long number. Alpha Sender ID is not supported in Malaysia
Content
Operators in Malaysia have tightened the rules and penalties whereby all traffic must include brand, company name, or identity in the message bodies, or else penalties might be imposed by the operators on top of the standard SMS charges. These messages are to be used for A2P purposes only (OTP, transactional, and marketing).
There is a split of international and domestic traffic based on what brand, company name, or identity you are going to include in your messages and we are able to provide better price for traffic that can be categorized as domestic. Contact your Account Manager for more details.
Due to massive SMS Spam and Phishing complaint, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had mandated all operators to filter message containing URL.
In addition, message including following items may subject to operator filtering too:
Request for End-User information; and Mobile or Fixed Number provided to call back.
To avoid filtering, please remove the above items from message content.
Prohibited Content
Adult, political, gambling, racial, and religious content are not allowed.
Content Modifications
Mobile operators require content header "RM0.00" for message sent to Malaysia. This is done to inform end users that they were not charged to receive these messages. If you have not added this to your message body, the operator may add "RM0.00 " "RM0.0 " or "RM0 " (with a space after the last 0) and this may compromise the maximum length of your SMS.
There are no other additional content restrictions beyond those in our Acceptable Use Policy.
Unicode
Unicode is supported.
Binary
Binary is supported.
Concatenated Messages
Concatenated messages are supported to all networks except DiGi (502 16).
Other Features or Restrictions
Delivery Receipts
Delivery receipts are network receipts and therefore should not be taken as an accurate measure of delivery.
