Question
Can the SMS/ MMS feature be disabled for a Virtual number that supports SMS, MMS and Voice?
I am not expecting inbound SMS and want to avoid getting charged. How do I not get charged for it?
Applies To
- Long Virtual Number
- SMS API
- Voice API
Answer
Unfortunately, the SMS feature cannot be disabled in a Virtual number.
Customers are encouraged to buy virtual numbers that specifically meet their requirements. It is always recommended to buy a Voice-only number if the customer is only sending Voice traffic.
There are cases where Voice-only LVNs are unavailable for some countries (e.g., the United States). The customer may be charged for the inbound messages received in their LVN in these cases.
For most countries, Vonage has no control or the means to block or disable the features of not receiving these inbound messages. Vonage may be charged for these inbound messages, and, in turn, we may charge the customers accordingly. However, for US and Canada LVN/ TFN, we can disable the SMS/ MMS feature on best efforts. Please reach out to our Support team for such request.
Additional Information
Outbound SMS or outbound Voice can be blocked through Fraud Defender.
