Overview
Vonage EU data center (DC) isolation enables customers to keep personal data associated with communications records (such as SMS messages) within the EU. While transiting Vonage’s proprietary platform, Vonage can guarantee that the processing and storage of such personal data is restricted to Vonage EU data centers only.
Data Processing and Storage
Vonage can not guarantee EU DC isolation if an end user’s number doesn’t belong to an EU country, or if the handset is roaming; under these conditions we encourage customers to implement verification of a user’s physical location using our Number Insight API prior to submitting requests to the Vonage SMS API platform. Requests to numbers under these conditions will not be rejected by the Vonage API or be EU DC isolated.
Do we send any data outside of our EU data centers?
Vonage utilizes mobile operators and aggregators (suppliers) for delivery of SMS messages to and from mobile handsets. Vonage’s EU DC isolation applies while these messages are transiting on Vonage’s proprietary platform; whilst we aim to restrict our suppliers to those that restrict data to within the EU, Vonage cannot guarantee that this is always possible.
For operational purposes such as reporting and insights, anonymized and aggregated data from our customers’ communication records are sent to data centers outside of the EU; this data includes:
- Aggregations for Business Intelligence, e.g. counts of SMS sent to each network
- Aggregations for billing
- Aggregations for Adaptive Routing
What countries does Vonage offer EU data center isolation in?
Vonage offers EU DC isolation on Vonage SMS API requests originating from all EU27 countries and the UK.
Why is the UK included in EU data center isolation?
The UK left the EU on 31st January 2020, however the EU has decided that the UK provides adequate protections to process and store EU citizen information. For the purposes of EU data isolation Vonage may allow data to flow in and out of UK data centers.
