Overview
Vonage SMS EU Data Storage enables customers to store end-user personal data associated with SMS communications records within the EU while on Vonage's proprietary platform.
SMS EU Data Storage is a data storage offering only. It is designed to ensure that certain end-user personal data is stored within EU data centres. It does not restrict or guarantee where data is processed or accessed. Vonage personnel and systems located outside the EU may access EU stored data in the course of providing services, including customer support, fraud prevention, and business intelligence functions.
This offering is distinct from the SMS EU Data Isolation Beta product, which is no longer available to new customers.
The personal data in scope of this offering is:
| IP address | Inbound & Outbound | IP address of the end-user device at the time of the API request |
| Recipient phone number | Outbound | The destination mobile number the SMS is sent to |
| Origin phone number | Inbound | The mobile number from which an inbound SMS is received |
| Message content | Inbound & Outbound | The body text of the SMS message |
End-user personal data associated with SMS is stored within EU data centres (Dublin and Frankfurt). This applies to:
- CDR’s (call detail records)
- Historical/backup CDR’s
- Application logs
- Elasticsearch CDR logs
EU Data Storage Endpoints
Using EU-specific endpoints is not a requirement for data to be stored in the EU, but is recommended as it also keeps message traffic routed through EU infrastructure.

Personal Data Minimisation (Auto-redact)
For customers who need to minimise the personal data retained in their communications records, Vonage offers an Auto-Redact service as an optional paid add-on. This product can redact phone numbers and message content from CDRs and server logs at source, before data enters the storage pipeline. Please note that Auto-Redact reduces the personal data content of stored records but does not change the geographic location of storage.

How Do I Request EU Data Storage?
This is available by default for all customers. No action required.
Is it possible to store my personal data outside of the EU?
At this time, it is currently not possible for customers to opt out of EU personal data storage. If you have contractual or regulatory requirements that create a conflict with EU personal data storage, please contact your account manager so that we may assess your situation.
