WhatsApp Authentication Template Compliance Oct 2023
In May 2023, Meta introduced new guidelines for authentication message templates, From October 2nd 2023, non-compliant authentication templates will stop working if they don't meet these guidelines.
This means that customers who try to send authentication messages with these templates will have their messages rejected and cannot be appealed.
Meta recommends businesses to create new authentication templates to make sure they can continue to send messages.

What will happen if I use a non-compliant template?
Any authentication messages such as an OTP sent using the template will be rejected. This means that:
- Messages API will return a 1020 - Invalid Params error code with a "rejected" callback
- There will be no charge as no message will have been delivered
How can I find out if I am non-compliant?
Download a list of templates from your Meta Business Manager.
What are the guidelines?
The WhatsApp guidelines for authentication templates state that:
- Content and parameters: Emojis, links and parameters with more than 15 characters are not supported.
- Buttons: One copy code or auto-fill button with a verification code. Learn more.
- Media: Media is not supported.
What do I need to do?
Review all of your authentication templates and check that they meet these guidelines. The WhatsApp recommendation is to create new templates instead of editing existing ones.
How can I create a new authentication template?
There are 2 ways you can do this:
- Use the Vonage WhatsApp Template Management API
- Using the Meta Business Manager portal where you can edit templates
